10 best singles of 2012 (10 - 1)

These aren't the biggest selling hits of the year and we hope that some readers will discover a new song to love, as these are the tracks we had stuck on repeat in 2012. So, after much deliberation here's our final 10, as picked by the Digital Spy music team.

We said: "The singalong chorus may be a hasty reminder that his strength lies in fist-clenching croonery, but the result nonetheless is one of the most interesting musical evolutions of 2012."

9. Paloma Faith: 'Picking up the Pieces'

We said: "She may not think she's able to obtain the prime ideal of perfection, but 'Picking up the Pieces' skirts dangerously close - and for that alone, it's more than worthy of some global recognition."


8. Jessie Ware: 'Wildest Moments'

We said: "The stadium-rousing drums and sing-along chorus easily make it her most chart-friendly offering, but she manages it without compromising class or giving into the usual self-indulgent bombast."

We said: "A wistful slice of '80s electro that feels both wonderfully fresh and beautifully classic."


6. Rudimental: 'Feel the Love'

We said: "'Feel the Love' is a colliding of the collective's influences, from the wobbly D&B bassline in the verses, to the jazzy horns on the breakdown, to the soul-drenched vocals from guest feature John Newman."

We said: "The arms-aloft chorus helmed by Max Martin and Shellback might make for her poppermost effort yet, but if anyone's earned the right to their own worldwide break-up anthem, it's surely Taylor Swift."

We said: "The steadily-building synths and spacey electronics come courtesy of producer-du-jour Diplo, for whom the phrase 'less is more' meant very little until now."

We said: 'Daddy, I've fallen for a monster', they admit over a Motown-inspired chorus of '60s finger-clicking backbeats, before insisting he's 'the best I ever had' in perfect soul-pop harmony.

We said: "Yes, it's full of all the usual clean-cut, pre-teen Americanisms about wishing wells and innocently-ripped jeans, but it's difficult not to be taken in by the charming if not sickly chorus. Fortunately, those who have seen the official accompanying clip will know that she also possesses a wicked sense of humour."
