''LIFE BEYOND THE STARS?!''
Since civilisation began we have seemed to need to believe in something grander than ourselves, a benign force that would steer us away from the follies and hatreds that we see ourselves consumed by God, of course fulfilled the role for centuries.
But in a secular age,an omnipotent God has given way to omniscient extraterrestrials who -some seem to hope- would be able to pass on to us their philosophy, learning and advanced technology.Only then would we able to rationalise our societies, do away with war, eradicate disease,........and on and on and so on.
The shift to ET is most dramatically reflected in the phenomenon of unidentified flying objects. The first UFO was seen in 1947 by an American Pilot who reported ''disk-like-objects'' travelling through the sky near Mount Ranier in Washington State. There have been hundreds if not thousands- of sightings since.
In 1968 the hue and cry about the UFOs was such that the US government sponsored a study by the University of Colorado. The subsequent report rejected any extraterrestrial hypothesis, attributed all the sightings studied to natural causes, and disdained any further study of the subject.
It did not stop the sightings, of course. Researchers since have noted the ''psychological desire'' of many people who have seen strange phenomena to interpret them as manifestations of extraterrestrials -to believe the unbelievable, in other words.
A few hundred years ago such events would have been attributed to God or his angels or called miracles. In the 60s with the world in the midst of cold war that could have turned hot any time, with space exploration rapidly moving forward, these events were credited to space travelers.
Yet the questions remains -is there life beyond the stars!
A complicated formula exists for calculating the probability of intelligent extraterrestrial life. Beginning with the number of stars in our Milky Way Galaxy =''about 400 Billion'' = and establishing how many are like the Sun =maybe 40 Billion= it works out how many have solar system with planets like Earth that could have evolved intelligent life forms.Depending on what factors you build into the calculations, you will end up with figures of somewhere between 400 to 4000 in our galaxy alone. Oh dear!
So, our ultimate object is to make contacts with an advanced civilisation somewhere in the Milky Way, to confirm that we are not alone in this vast vast cold cold Universe. The contrary, perhaps, would be just too frightening to contemplate. But for now stay frightened and even shivering!!
With respectful dedication to every field of science and !WOW!
Good Night & God Bless!
