A Mercy by Toni Morrison

It is a short novel by the Nobel Prize-winning author of "Beloved", and can be appreciated best when read in one or a couple sittings. Indeed, the the simple story is told in several voices, but reading these voices in succession weaves a tapestry that tells a larger story about America's history of slavery and the extermination of Native Americans. A Mercy is not plot or character driven -- it is about the voice of the past and what it means to be human.

In the 1680s the slave trade was still in its infancy. In the Americas, virulent religious and class divisions, prejudice and oppression were rife, providing the fertile soil in which slavery and race hatred were planted and took root. Jacob is an Anglo-Dutch trader and adventurer, with a small holding in the harsh north. Despite his distaste for dealing in “flesh,” he takes a small slave girl in part payment for a bad debt from a plantation owner in Catholic Maryland. This is Florens, “with the hands of a slave and the feet of a Portuguese lady.” Florens looks for love, first from Lina, an older servant woman at her new master’s house, but later from a handsome blacksmith, an African, never enslaved. There are other voices: Lina, whose tribe was decimated by smallpox; their mistress, Rebekka, herself a victim of religious intolerance back in England; Sorrow, a strange girl who’s spent her early years at sea; and finally the devastating voice of Florens’ mother. These are all men and women inventing themselves in the wilderness.

Russian Tourists At Ski Resorts – Reckless But Generous

Russian skiers are the least likely to wear helmets but they prefer the most difficult ski routes. They tip generously and order expensive wine -- a survey shows.

According to a survey by French company Temmos, managing a hotel chain in the French Alps, Russian tourists are among the most reckless skiers of all Europeans. Only 27% of them wear helmets on the slopes while 76% of them go for “red” routes that are the most difficult.

The amount of Russians skiing with helmets increased over the last three seasons only by 5%. This proportion is however quite different from the other European tourists who generally show a clear tendency to increase their skiing safety.

For example, 56% of French tourists wear helmets and about 70% of them prefer the red routes; among Germans – 63% of the skiers have helmets and 71% opt for red routes. Both nations have shown great progress over the past few years since the helmet use rates during the last three seasons increased among the French by 10% and among the Germans by 12%, reported Tourprom.ru.

Dorothy of Oz (2012)

Dorothy of Oz is an upcoming film based on the book by Roger Stanton Baum by the same name.

The story -- Dorothy Gale returns to Kansas to find it devastated. Dorothy then finds a new way to get back to Oz, only to discover that her old friends the Scarecrow, Tin Man, Cowardly Lion and the entire Land of Oz, are all in grave danger. On Dorothy's new journey through Oz, she meets a man made of marshmallows who can't think for himself, a china doll princess whose bossiness is a cover for her fragility, and a tugboat with as many personalities as he has pieces. With the help of her new friends, they band together against a wicked Jester who wants to control Oz.

The film is directed by Dan St. Pierre and Will Finn starring Lea Michele as Dorothy Gale, Martin Short as The Jester, Dan Aykroyd as The Scarecrow, Kelsey Grammer as The Tin Man, James Belushi as The Cowardly Lion, Hugh Dancy as Marshall Mallow, Megan Hilty as China Princess, Oliver Platt as Wiser the Owl, Patrick Stewart as Tugg and Michael Krawic as Uncle Henry. Brittany Murphy's Father Wants Her Death Re-Investigated

Unconvinced that his daughter's death was adequately investigated, the father of deceased actress Brittany Murphy has filed a complaint calling for Murphy's autopsy specimens to be released for independent investigation.

In the complaint, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on Tuesday, Angelo Bertolotti says claims that the investigation into Murphy's December 20, 2009 death was far from complete. "Plaintiff exhausted all extrajudicial means of ensuring that his daughter's death is finally and fully investigated," the complaint reads. "In spite of his efforts, to date there has been no investigation, none of the potential witnesses and/or persons of interest have been questioned and only very basic autopsy procedures/toxicology testing has been performed."

Specifically, Bertolotti says that Murphy's hair and other specimens were never tested "for any poisons, toxins or heavy metals."

The complaint claims that arsenic poisoning is sometimes misdiagnosed as pneumonia and anemia -- which were contributing factors to Murphy's death, according to the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office investigation.

India's top order failed again in the 2nd innings after David Warner's 180 powered Australia to a strong lead on the 2nd day of the 3rd Test match.
Australia were cut down for 369 but the opening stand of 214 between Warner and Ed Cowan proved enough for a good lead before Australian fast bowlers claimed early wickets to storm towards 3-0 lead.
India need to win to have a hope of retaining the Border-Gavaskar Trophy but at the close of play, the tourists were reeling on 88-4 in their second innings, an overall deficit of 120 runs. Rahul Dravid was unbeaten on 32, with Virat Kohli on 21.
Indian paceman Umesh Yadav claimed 5 wickets as Indian bowlers showed their courage and ceased Australia to 369 despite a demoralising opening stand, but Indian batsmen frittered their efforts failing to cope with Australian fast-men.
defeated Gautam Gambhir with a ball that pranced at the batsman and looped to gully off the bat handle, and then pinned Sachin Tendulkar lbw with in-swing. Tendulkar was unhappy about the decision, shaking his head as he walked off then reacting with dismay to replays that showed the ball clipping leg stump. Virender Sehwag was undone by a Siddle delivery that lifted and left him,
Young left-arm paceman Mitchell Starc defeated Gautam Gambhir, caught in the slips from a steepling delivery in his first over and Virender Sehwag fell to Peter Siddle in the following over.
Sachin Tendulkar was trapped leg-before wicket by Starc for a paltry eight while VVS Laxman made another duck on a wretched tour, edging Hilfenhaus' outswinger into the cordon as India slumped to 51-4.
