HIGH-achieving Victorian students could receive offers worth tens of thousands of dollars from the world's top universities.

Graduates of the International Baccalaureate, who receive their results today, are also in hot demand locally as institutions scramble to secure their enrolment.

Nationally about 3000 students will graduate from the increasingly popular VCE alternative, taught at 13 Victorian schools.

Association of Australasian IB schools standing committee member Antony Mayrhofer said top achievers were offered scholarships and study bonuses to help them into sought-after courses, such as medicine.

"We have a number of international universities now really targeting Australian IB diploma graduates," he said.

Outgoing IB Schools Victoria and Tasmania chairman Stuart Davis, the principal at St Leonard's College in Brighton East, said the most interest came from US and UK universities, including Brown, Harvard, Oxford and Cambridge.
