DRUGS '''THE AGONY-ECSTASY-

DESTRUCTION'''

Here is the latest research behind those cocaine, cannabis and ecstasy miseries.

IT WILL COME AS NO SURPRISE THAT THE LONG-TERM USE OF MOOD ALTERING DRUGS WILL HAVE HORRID, SERIOUS AND POTENTIALLY IRREVERSIBLE EFFECTS ON YOUR HEALTH.

Persistence injectors of Heroin, for example, increase their risk of premature death - probably by respiratory failure following overdose - by ''30'' times compared to the abstainer of the same age.
But what about the much more commonly used recreational drugs : ecstasy, cannabis and cocaine? What's the prognosis for the person who took those drugs over a fairly sustained period but has now scaled back or given up?

The answer is that it is hard to say. In many cases recent users of these drugs are now are now the first round of guinea pigs for scientific research, but occasionally we are offered glimpses of what to expect. An extreme example is the very strange case of Mr A, a very dedicated ecstasy addict. Detailed by a psychiatrist at a London Hospital, Mr A took a pill at a very early age.

Over the first 2 years, he had a high but perhaps not an unusual pattern of 5 tablets every weekend, which escalated into an average daily pattern of 3.5 pills for the next three years and then an incredible crescendo of up to 25 tablets every day over the next four years. That's a staggering total of 40,000 tablets swallowed.

Of course, this couldn't go on. After collapsing three times, Mr A finally decided to stop and reflect. Dr Kouirrmtsidis, who treated him for five months, writes ''He developed severe panic attacks, recurrent anxiety, depression, muscle rigidity, particularly at the jaw and neck levels, functional hallucinations and paranoid ideation.'' Although he hasn't touched ecstasy for seven years, Mr A continues to suffer various unpleasant psychiatric and physical effects including depressed mood, paranoia, and jaw muscles to stiff that he is often simply unable to open his mouth.

Now, while this case alone gives more than ample reason to steer well clear of drugs, the fact is that people are much more restrained in their habits. All drug use tends to decline with age  -often as result of boredom, family responsibilities or fading acquaintances.
But, if you took an individual who started using ecstasy, cannabis or cocaine in their twenties and then clocked up a decade of steady, regular use, what would be the likely effects on their body and brain?
Be assured we will cover it in the future Posts.

So, remember Drugs, Misery and Devastation of Humanity are closely interlinked!
