Saad killing: Indefinite strike at BAU

The students of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) have started indefinite strike on Tuesday demanding expulsion of the three students who had earlier been suspended for various terms over BCL leader Saad Ibne Momtaz’s murder.

Hundreds of students have locked the animal husbandry department of the university at 8am as students of the department were attending for a class.

They staged hour long sit-in programme in front of the administrative building around 8:30am. Later, they brought out a procession on the campus demanding immediate arrest of the killers.

No classes or examinations were held at the university since morning due to the strike.

One demonstrating student Mostafa said: “We’ll continue our strike until the accused are arrested.”

“Additional police have been deployed on the campus following the unrest over Saad killing,” Kotowali model police station Officer-in-Charge Golam Sarowar said.

Following a report submitted by the investigation committee on April 8, the BAU authorities expelled three students and suspended three others for their alleged involvement in the killing.

But the agitating students rejected the university authorities’ suspension order and they have been continuing their agitation demanding expulsion of the three students, who were suspended for three months.

On April 15, the university authorities have formed a five-member probe body for carrying out further investigation and it was asked to submit its report within 21 working days.

Saad Ibne Momtaz, a Bangladesh Chhatra League leader of BAU unit, was killed in an attack allegedly by a rival group on the campus on April 1.
