''' *DEAF SLAVES RIGHTS* ? '''
''PROUD PAKISTAN'' -the first historic conceptual host of The World Students Society, deliciously called, !WOW!-
I stop by to appreciate and thank:
Prime Minster M Nawaz Sharif, Minster of Interior Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, Merium Nawaz Sharif and all concerned :
For their efforts on initiating Pakistan Youth Change Organization: PYCO lightboxing at www. BoloJawan.com
I also stop to admire and thank Mr Michael Patrick Foley. CEO of this very distinguished company, Telenor Pakistan, for the pristine thought on the Youth Forum at Telenor.
How have all these changes come about? All these new and great initiatives? The World Students Society never makes any claims. We only do our very best:
*To Help Build A Better World*
The World Students Society !WOWS! every student to join these respective honours and make them into a sterling success. We wish and hope that all other countries in the Developing World would emulate these examples and efforts.
How we react to the needs of the students would soon become a unique measure of who we are, as individuals and as a society. As simple and as plain as that.
Addressing the problems and needs of the youth and students. should be treated as a National Emergency and attacking it should be the primary mission of !WOW! the world over.
Not all Deaf People want to be ''Fixed'. Yes Cochlear Implants can transform life for people with hearing loss.
Student Abigail Gorman, all set to study Human Rights in Denmark, continues her story.
And signing would always be my first language.
My feeling was that the implant would improve my hearing, but also my ability to lip read, so I'd be able to better participate in both the deaf and hearing worlds.
Ultimately she respected my decision and supported me, coming with me when I had the implant fitted in March this year.
Five weeks later, the implant was switched on. There are all sorts of videos on YouTube showing this moment, where people burst into tears because they can suddenly hear, but there's a misconception.
When the doctor switched it on, it was certainly quite overwhelming to be able to hear, but all I got was a loud, intense buzzing -which i was told was quite normal.
Slowly, over the next few weeks, my brain started to get used to hearing, decipher and distinguish different sounds. I have only been hearing things for a few weeks -equivalent to a baby.
Essentially, I am learning to hear.
Not long after surgery, I began to notice a repetitive, rhythmic sound was often there. I was hearing a clock ticking. Another day, I realised I could hear a bird singing.
Romantic as that story sounds, I found it incredibly annoying. I guess hearing people to filter these sounds out, but to me they're there just all the time.
I learnt to hear the sound of my own voice, and my speech now is pretty good.
The only problem is that now I can hear myself,. I can hear when I am making mistakes, which has knocked my confidence. I've decided to see a speech therapist to improve.
Probably the best thing has been that I can hear music - where before I had to rely on sensing the vibrations.
I've listened to more music in the last two weeks than I have in the last two years. I love Ed Sheeran, and my favorite song is *Thinking Out Loud*. I already knew the lyrics, but now the song and the melody have on a whole new resonance.
A COCHLEAR implant isn't a cure., but I have no regrets about having it fitted. It's so wonderful to be able to hear music, to hear what my hearing friends and colleagues are saying more easily- and to hear my own voice
However, I'm still a proud sign language user, and world always choose to sign rather than speak -this device just gives me a choice.
My ambition is to work to improve rights for Deaf People, because nobody should be treated differently because of how they communicate.
With most respectful dedication to Abigail Gorman, Leaders, Students, Professors and Teachers of the World. See Ya all on !WOW! -the World Students Society and !E-WOW! -the Ecosystem 2011:
