PET DOGS TO GET MICROCHIPS

REGISTRATION

Sarawak moves to contain Rabies outbreak in state, says state government.

THE Sarawak government will start registering pet dogs using microchips as the state intensifies efforts to contain a rabies outbreak.

Funded by the state government, the pilot programme will be carried out in Bau district in the first quarter of the year.

State local government minister said the chip, was the size of a rice grain, would store identification details, such as the name, breed, age of the dog and the pet owner's information.

''Based on our records, there are between  1,500 and 2,000 pet dogs in Bau. Hence, it will take about a month for the team to implant the chip in all pet dogs.''

''We will monitor how the exercise can help local authorities remove strays from streets, hence, preventing rabies from spreading.

The chip would be inject between the  dog's shoulder blades at the back of their neck.''
