Rafael Nadal outlasted a fierce comeback from Alexander Zverev to win a record eighth Italian Open and overtake Roger Federer as World Number 1 on Sunday.
Nadal claimed first set 6-1 with ease before the German launched an assault winning nine of the next 11 games to take the second set 6-1 and lead 3-1 in the decider.
But the Spaniard found his rhythm back following a rain break and cruised to 6-1 1-6 6-3 victory.
The King of Clay has now won three of past four clay-court titles and is hot favourite for an 11th Roland Garros title in Paris.
