COLOMBO : The Sri Lankan parliament on Wednesday passed a bill to set up the special high court to try corruption cases at a fast pace and to hear cases on daily basis.
*The move came against the backdrop of increasing corruption cases but where the judicial system is tardy and corrupt as is the bureaucracy*.
Former justice minister Dr. Wijedasa Rajapakshe, who is now minister for higher education, told parliament that there were 632,000 cases that were delayed in 2012, but the number rose to 745,000 in 2016.
Taking into consideration the seriousness of the issue, the Sri Lankan parliament passed the bill to set up the special high court but-
Where the new act does not abridge the power of the Supreme Court or the independence of the judiciary.
