Google staffers walk out in Zurich, Switzerland. |
Google employees staged a coordinated walkout in google's offices around the world protesting the sexual misconduct in the company.
Employees in New York, India, Singapore, Tokyo and Zurich came out of offices in numbers with demonstrations expected in Google's San Francisco office and headquarters in Mountain View, California.
The demonstrations appeared to be triggered by a New York Times investigation that revealed sexual harassment scandals over many years in the company and lack of action and transparency. It also showed several accused executives to have received multimillion-dollar severance packages, with one receiving $90m upon resigning.
"I think the NYT story was the catalyst but it's been a long time coming," said protester Diana Scholl, who is on the social marketing team at Google's YouTube.
"We're walking out in support of those who've been harassed anywhere in the workplace, and to ensure that perpetrators are not rewarded and are not protected," Sam Dutton, a developer advocate at Google, told CNN.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai ensured the protesters of "the support they need if they wish to participate" and that the company will covert their "constructive ideas" into action.
