The United Nations has said a humanitarian crisis is unfolding in Haiti.
It’s the poorest country in the western hemisphere, and almost half the population – 4.7m Haitians – are facing acute hunger.
In the country’s capital, Port-au-Prince, the UN said 19,000 people are facing the prospect of living in ‘famine-like conditions’.
People there are also dealing with a deadly cholera epidemic.
Armed groups and gangs control as much as 60% of the city and surrounding areas – complicating efforts to get help and aid to those in need.
