ACROSS THE UNIVERSE : A.I. PRECIS

Many types of artificial intelligence are already being deployed across a wide range of scientific disciplines :

'' Counting endangered animals ''

Wildlife Conservation

Neural networks identify harmful starfish in photos and count endangered animals in drone pictures.

In one study, automatically classifying 3.2 million images saved 8.4 years in human labour.

'' Understanding the brain ''

Neuroscience

'' Geometric '' deep learning deciphers how groups of neurons work together. Looking at the brain in terms of shapes could allow scientists to better understand both diseases and normal functioning.

'' Uncovering hidden patterns in knots ''

Pure Mathematics

A neural network was used to find a hitherto-unknown connection between the geometric and algebraic representations of knots.

The AI also found new aspects of their underlying structure.
